S

aint Alphonsus Maria de Liguori was an Italian bishop, theologian, and founder of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists). Born on September 27, 1696, in Marianella, near Naples, Italy, Alphonsus was the eldest of seven children in a noble and devout family. A brilliant student, he earned a doctorate in civil and canon law at the young age of 16 in 1713 and became a successful lawyer. However, disillusioned with the corruption of the legal profession, he abandoned his career after losing a critical case in 1723.

Alphonsus discerned his call to the priesthood and was ordained on December 21, 1726. From then on, he dedicated himself to serving the poor and neglected, especially in rural areas where pastoral care was scarce. To further this mission, he founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists) on November 9, 1732, a religious order committed to preaching missions and ministering to the most abandoned.

In 1762, Alphonsus was appointed Bishop of Sant’Agata dei Goti. He reformed his diocese, fostered devotion to the Eucharist, improved the education of the clergy, and tirelessly served the spiritual needs of his flock. Due to his declining health, he resigned as bishop in 1775, but he continued to write extensively and guide the Redemptorists.

A prolific writer and composer, Alphonsus produced over 100 works on moral theology, spirituality, and pastoral care. His notable writings include Moral Theology and The Glories of Mary. He also composed beloved hymns, including Tu Scendi dalle Stelle (“You Descend from the Stars”), an Italian Christmas carol that remains popular to this day.

St. Alphonsus passed away on August 1, 1787, at the age of 90. Recognized for his holiness and contributions to the Church, he was canonized by Pope Gregory XVI on May 26, 1839. He was later declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius IX on March 23, 1871, for his profound influence on moral theology and his pastoral wisdom.

On April 26, 1950, Pope Pius XII proclaimed St. Alphonsus de Liguori the patron saint of confessors and moral theologians, honoring his lasting legacy in guiding the faithful and shaping the Church’s teachings. His feast day is celebrated annually on August 1.
